Our Story

SAJEN means offerings to the ancient gods of the Balinese and Javanese people in Indonesia. In choosing SAJEN as my company name, I am returning to my roots: Central Java, Indonesia and embracing the gifts of my ancestral grandmothers.  The idea of marketing JAMU in San Francisco Bay Area came as a surprise to me and everyone in my immediate family. Though the art of blending JAMU remains within my family, the art of selling it has ceased within my family.  With secular education, my father opted to be in a profession. I came to the Bay Area in 2006 after I completed my work assignment with the United Nations/ International Labor Office in Geneva, Switzerland.

I think JAMU found me.  In the winter months of  2007,  my five senses were consumed with JAMU and its elements.  I dreamed about them for days.  I tried to ignore them but they kept coming at me.  The more I ignored them the more they kept coming to me.  In 2008 I decided not to fight it but to embrace JAMU.  As the Chinese have their acupuncture and herbal teas, the Indians have their Ayurveda, and I have my JAMU.  These ancient art of healing have helped us to take care of ourselves for many centuries.  I believe JAMU is ready to enter the North American market and I think I am the perfect person to bring it to you.

History

Making JAMU is my family tradition.  My ancestral grandmothers blended JAMU for their families and their communities in small hamlets (Para’an and Gagaran) in the mountainous regions of Central Java, Indonesia within a traveling distance from Borobudur, the Ancient Buddhist Temple.  They used only organic fresh ingredients infused with positive intentions. That same blends and infusion are my offerings to you.

I was born and raised in the JAMU culture, a culture that believes in the power of mother nature and its health impact on our well-being.  People use root spices, leaves, barks, fruits, stems, flowers, and flower buds for health, wellness, and beauty inside out.
